America

America if I could
I would tighten my eyes to the smoke
Between your ribs
And wake up in your heart
America
If I could I would find you now
I’d tell you we are but a broken ornament
Swinging on a fraying string
In America
America save your traffic for another hour
Love your oil mill and your box car
Save your can’t instead as fuel
Dare to sing your limits
From the ash fields and quarries
We are a dripping city
The sweat that smears the phonebook ink
The sweat that smears the phonebook ink
In America
In Franklin Indiana
Your nuclear froths like mad animal
Your lakeshore strobe a bourbon
And the slat of passing freight
America save your traffic for another hour
Love your oil mill and your box car
Save your can’t instead as fuel
Dare to sing your limits from the ash fields and quarries
Your live oak
A Georgia shackle
Your live oak
A Georgia shackle
Your arroyo
A wailing wall
And to it all tonight
Wrap yourself in Kansas flag
Ad astra per aspera tonight
Wrap yourself in Kansas flag
Ad astra per aspera tonight
Let the reapers in the forty bathe in star tonight
Let the reapers in the forty bathe in star tonight
Let the reapers in the forty bathe in star tonight
Let the reapers in the forty bathe in star tonight
America

Livingston
03:43
|
|||
Tonight I can see for miles
You’ve tossed the blind and turned a while
And wild above your crooked smile
There’s payphone in your eyes
But now I’m all out of change
And this receiver’s humming like the rain
That’s strung out on the tension lines
A choir stumbling through the sky
Where this distance is not our own
And it swings over every pier and silo
As we’re counting ties
We’re counting freight
And we’re counting time
We’re counting days
Just to pay our way back home
Just to pay our way back home
Tonight your raindrop’s time has come
Driving south from Livingston
The town of iron blanket flood
Of Bitterroot off run
Where the world upon itself is bending
The Tetons' rearview mist is tempered
By your temple
On my homebound shoulder as I sing
That this distance is not our own
And it swings over every pier and silo
As we’re counting ties
We’re counting freight
And we’re counting time
We’re counting days
Just to pay our way back home
Just to pay our way back home

Zombies

I said first things first
I got a pretty little predilection
I got a fondness for fiction
That emerges under my affection
So take a step closer to me
If part of you needs to believe
That some of this isn’t a dream
That none of this isn’t a dream
She said forgetting the past
Has never compromised my convictions
That remembering vices
Is the noblest of my afflictions
So take a step closer to me
If part of you needs to believe
That silence ain’t just what it seems
Cause a canyon can grow from a stream
And a forest can grow from a seed
And desire can grow from a need
And desire can grow from a need
And desire can grow from a need

Today
03:54
|
|||
I stopped leaving today
A mile deep in the vale
Weaving shrouds of haste
Out of displaced names and tales
Oh grey day
No dawn on your blade
Meets the earth with rage
Oh grey day
You can’t pray a lie
When there’s nothing left to write
You stammer, hum, and spin
Turn a thief into a king
Oh grey day
No dawn on your blade
Meets the earth with rage
Oh grey day
I am beaten by a highway sign
Each letter like a broken vow
I measure the years between the us
And the now
The road looks like hell
But it’s where I work
Our story’s a diamond
For what it’s worth
I stopped leaving today

Nightbus
03:17
|

I’m on the nightbus from the city to the suburbs
I’ve had enough fun for one night
For my life, for one night
I want my life like rows of trees
Rows of houses, rows of me
And where the street meet there I’ll be
There I’ll sit, and there I’ll be
I’m on the nightbus from the city to the suburbs
I’ve had enough fun for one night
For my life, for one night
I want my life like rows of trees
Rows of houses, rows of me
And where the street meet there I’ll be
There I’ll sit, and there I’ll be
I always loved him
Cause he never was the best
I always loved him
Cause he never was the best
Oh yes, oh yes
I’m on the nightbus from the city to the suburbs
I’ve had enough fun for one night
For my life, for one night
I want my life like rows of trees
Rows of houses, rows of me
And where the street meet there I’ll be
There I’ll sit, and there I’ll be

Daisy
03:54
|
|||
There's a slight shadow that's creeping quite slowly
Across all the things that we used to be
You were the candle I cupped in my fingers
Until I surrendered my hands to the breeze
So give me a love to drink down like water
I'll give you a kiss that's sweeter than wine
Give me a love that mixes with whiskey
I'll give you a kiss too good to be mine
I was the daisy that grew through the train ties
You were the engine with places to be
Life in a box car's no life for a daisy
You whispered soft as you sped over me
So give me a love to drink down like water
I'll give you a kiss that's sweeter than wine
Give me a love that mixes with whiskey
I'll give you a kiss too good to be mine
So don't give me a song like sun on my shoulder
Don't light me like lightning with a flash of your face
You know our best times, now, were tracked down by rain cloud
You know our best lightning struck miles away

Dopeless Hopefiend
04:31
|
|||
Friendless and faithless, there’s nothing inside
Maybe it’s my body or maybe it’s my pride
I abuse myself I amuse myself
When all’s said and done I’ve confused myself
When there’s nothing left to say or do
Nowhere left to go
Things couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better
Not any better than this
Nothing moves me, no nothing makes me try
I’d say that I love you but I’d be telling a lie
I don’t let people in I don’t where to begin
Just close my eyes and laugh it off and force out a grin
When there’s nothing left to say or do
Nowhere left to go
Things couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better
Not any better than this
The dopeless hopefiends, that’s you and that’s me
I stole that yes I know but good words they don’t come free
Oh dreams and such they never amount to much
I can’t believe in anything I can’t see or touch
When there’s nothing left to say or do
Nowhere left to go
Things couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better no
They couldn’t get any better
Not any better than this

It's been many years since you've been around
It's been many years since I've seen you smile
It's been many a day since I heard you say
There's truth in the shadow at the edge of the road
I picked up my bag at first sign of the storm
And I headed for someplace darker than normal
Where the sun hides away on the brightest of days
But casts a great shadow on the edge of the road
How soon I forget how soon I had learned
In two years of mountains one echo returned
There was one there was two there was me there was you
There in a shadow on the edge of the road
There are no highways in the world where you live
But there is a pathway of stars overhead
If you swear then I'll swear that I'll meet you there
There in the shadow at the edge of the road
There is a shadow at the edge of the road

Drunk Songbirds
05:09
|
|||
That I might start anew
Far from the thump
That I might start anew
That I might start anew
Far from you
That I might start anew
Like drunk songbirds on the walls of this machine
Oh darling don't you never say just what you mean
Cause I've spared no chance to find you
On a leaving road
That runs like blood
These veins that flood
With every ballad never sung
And every distant hum
Every distant hum
That I might start anew
Far from you
That I might start anew
That I might start anew
Far from you
That I might start anew
Like drunk songbirds on the walls of this machine
Oh darling don't you never say just what you mean
Arms' marrow rushing to the window
On the sun like a pulsebeat
Our furrow seeded with the accidental promise
Of a good dream
What might have been
That I might start anew
Far from the thump
That I might start anew
Like drunk songbirds on the walls of this machine
I rhymed to see myself in you
I leaned too hard on mercy too
But all this is too close at night
I flail at your distant light
That I might start anew
Far from the thump
That I might start anew
That I might start anew
Far from you
That I might start anew
Like drunk songbirds on the walls of this machine

A Kiss
03:26
|
|||
Resurrect a western ghost town
And I’ll find myself an eastbound breeze
That lets the sum of all our moments lost
Be known again to me
Through the sweep
Of sweet memories
Like a promise, like a plea
Like a kiss from you to me
Trade the unforgiving dead
For a pair of longing eyes
In a waiting world of finer things
That were not born to die
In a mournful melody
We were born to learn to see
Lit by a kiss from you to me
Oh your road advances to and from
On its shoulder I am broken down
Asphalt humming in the setting sun
As darkness falls
On me
Let our road lead to the sea
Let the water let me breathe
Let us bury our misery
In the sands of mystery
With a kiss from you to me

I Try
05:09
|
|||
Who are you between these lines
Above the earth, below the sky
The blur of lonely in my eyes
Lays shadows through the shifting night
I’ve got a fondness for goodbyes
They turn the dimming bedroom light
On separate corners of a fight
Two stars colliding in the night
Still I try
To find
Your light
But there’s nothing but the night
Inside
And I try to find your light
But there’s nothing but the night
From the bottom of a glass
There ain’t no glistening lash
There ain’t no lips for me to fashion
Onto at last
And I know this cursed black
It’s creased within the cracks
Among my beating heart that lacks
A porch light’s will to pull you back
But I try
To find
Your light
But there’s nothing but the night
Leave me a candle
There in the window
To wrestle the angels
And if you don't then
I’ll know that I drifted
Where you can’t follow
I try
To find
Your light
But there’s nothing but the night
Inside
And I try to find your light
Nothing but the night
Inside
And I try to find your light
Try to find your light
It's alright
It's alright
It's alright
I try
To find
Your light
But there’s nothing but the night
Inside
I try
I try

Ceretana New Fairfield, Connecticut
While studying in London, and despite different musical tastes, Chris Mignanelli and Marty Moran struck up a friendship over a mutual love of kebabs. A few years later, they ended up in Missoula at the same time, wrote and recorded an album, and pulled the band name from the side of a feed store. Some twists and turns later, they made a second album in Connecticut. ... more
